Addressing Social Determinants of Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Washington, D.C. –June 18, 2020 – Social determinants of health such as access to food, safe and reliable housing, transportation, and the environments in which we live and work, contribute significantly to overall health. During this time of economic uncertainty, social isolation, and physical illness, it is more important than ever to be mindful of how environmental and social factors contribute to our patients’ wellness. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to disproportionately impact medically underserved communities, we are committed to continuing our mission-focused effort to provide truly comprehensive care to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

Identifying and addressing these social determinants of health is a core part of what sets federally qualified health centers, like Unity Health Care, apart from other institutions in the District. We are uniquely situated to provide a full spectrum of support, beyond immediate medical needs. As our patients struggle to overcome new or more severe challenges, we are being called to facilitate access to the essential services and resources they deserve.

Our Social Services Department is a valuable resource for patients and their care teams. Agencies throughout the District have had to adjust their hours of operation and processes in response to COVID-19, which can be an obstacle for those seeking their services. Our Social Services staff maintain close contact with these service providers to make sure our patients can access the most up-to-date information.
